VOLUNTEER ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS NEEDED …
ROLE
The Advisory Board is the governing body of Women & Social Protection Tanzania. As a member of the Advisory Board, you will act in a position of trust for the community and be responsible for the effective governance of the organization. Orientation is provided to make sure Board Members are comfortable and knowledgeable in their role; previous board experience is an asset but not required.
LOCATION
Advisory Board Members may be located locally (in Tanzania) or may be foreign (located elsewhere).
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act honestly, in good faith and in the best interest of the organization.
- Govern, not manage, the organization.
- Contribute to defining the organization’s strategic directions and approve its strategic plan.
- Determine and monitor the organization’s programs and services.
- Ensure needed resources for the organization, including adequate funding.
- Approve, monitor and follow all Advisory Board policies.
- Create & review the bylaws and recommend bylaw changes to the membership.
- Abide by the bylaws and the various policies and procedures of the organization.
- Approve and monitor the organization’s budget and finances.
- Elect the Board chairman.
- Mentor new Board members.
- Review Board and self-reflect on own performance periodically.
- Attend, be prepared for and participate in Board, committee and related meetings.
- Participate in discussions and decision-making of the Advisory Board.
- Support and participate in fundraising activities.
- Assist in developing and maintaining positive, cooperative and respectful relations among or with the Advisory Board, committees, management, staff and community.
- Participate in a Board orientation session, Board retreats, Board education sessions and other gatherings of the Board, as necessary.
- Represent the organization when required or requested.
REQUIREMENTS
- Commitment to the vision, mission, values and work of the organization.
- Knowledge and skills in one or more areas of the Advisory Board governance including programs, finance, programs, human resources, fundraising and community relations.
- Participation on at least one committee, including attendance at meetings.
- Participation in monthly and other Advisory Board meetings.
- Participation in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and other meetings of the membership.
- Support of Women & Social Protection Tanzania and related events.
- Support of and participation in fundraising activities.
- Availability to serve the required term of office of 2 years to a maximum of 6 years.
COMMITMENT
To carry out these responsibilities, the Advisory Board meets initially every four weeks throughout the year, and this will be decreased accordingly depending on the need. In addition to attendance at Board meetings, you may be required to participate on committees. The Board is comprised of up to 10 members. Terms range from 1 to 2 years year. Members may serve a maximum of three consecutive 2-year terms.
